Charise - Albinism and other Medical Problems - Documentary
Join us for an intimate look into the life of Charise Johnson, a vibrant young African-American woman with a 10-year-old son and a busy life. When you first see her you can tell right away shes different. Charise has Albinism. And when you get to know her you will discover she really is different and theres nothing wrong with that. In 1974, when Charise was born, a childhood free of major health problems is not what life had in store for her. At the age of nine she was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. By the time Charise became an adult, she'd had several surgeries, a temporary ostomy bag, and ultimately had her large intestines removed entirely; after which she developed Crohn's disease. Arthritis has left her in need of knee replacements and a lifetime of damage to her skin from the sun has lead to re-occurring skin cancers. Charise, being blessed with a mature and supportive family had incredible support throughout her developmental years. They are what kept her grounded when the social pains far outweighed her physical ills. There was no shortage of bullies and teasers in Charises life. Even as an adult she cant escape the verbal abuse of strangers with statements like what are you?. In Charise: A Portrait of an African American with Albinism, Charise shares with us, her pains and her joys. She talks about her family life and what it is like having Albinism from medical, social and personal perspectives.

Beach Walk 599R - Homage to Age
I have not always had the most self confidence. But I must say the older I get, the more comfortable I am living in my own skin, viewing life through my own eyes, all instead of worrying what others think or how I should perform. I wonder if this feeling of deep-seated comfort could somehow be passed on, downloaded, or shared with younger people, and if so, how that might transform the world. I personally spent so much energy just managing my worries, many of which at this stage in life I see as utterly trivial! Maybe the sheer force in numbers and rebelliousness of the baby boomers is transforming the idea that it is more fun to be young. In fact, I do seem to be aware of far more multi-generational friendships than ever before. Is that true for you? Do you find getting older "a good thing"? P.S. Shane and Rox are traveling this week so please enjoy some of our Beach Walks Classic Episodes! Hawaiian word: Makahiki: age Join us at The Reef (reef.beachwalks.tv)

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE: ELEPHANTS 2 OF 3
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE: ELEPHANTS PART 2 OF 3 The elephants (Elephantidae) are a family in the order Proboscidea in the class Mammalia. They were once classified along with other thick skinned animals in a now invalid order, Pachydermata. There are three living species: the African Bush Elephant, the African Forest Elephant (until recently known collectively as the African Elephant), and the Asian Elephant (also known as the Indian Elephant). Other species have become extinct since the last ice age, which ended about 10,000 years ago, the Mammoth being the most well-known of these. Elephants are mammals, and the largest land animals alive today. The elephant's gestation period is 22 months, the longest of any land animal. At birth it is common for an elephant calf to weigh 120 kilograms (265 lb). An elephant may live as long as 70 years, sometimes longer. The largest elephant ever recorded was shot in Angola in 1956. This male weighed about 12,000 kg (26,400 lb), with a shoulder height of 4.2 m (13.8 ft), a metre (3 ft 4 in) taller than the average male African elephant. The smallest elephants, about the size of a calf or a large pig, were a prehistoric species that lived on the island of Crete during the Pleistocene epoch. Elephants are symbols of wisdom in Asian cultures, and are famed for their exceptional memory and high intelligence, rivalled only by cetaceans and hominids. Elephants are increasingly threatened by human intrusion and poaching. Once numbering in the millions, the African elephant population has dwindled to between 470,000 and 690,000 individuals. The elephant is now a protected species worldwide, with restrictions in place on capture, domestic use, and trade in products such as ivory. Elephants generally have no natural predators, although lions may take calves and occasionally adults. In some areas, lions may regularly take to preying on elephants.
